7.1-magnitude quake hits off coast of Japan's Fukushima”

An quake with a magnitude of 7.1 hit off the coast of eastern Japan on Saturday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The epicenter of the quake was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture at a depth of 60 kilometers (36 miles), the agency said.

The quake hit off of Fukushima just weeks before the 10-year anniversary of the March 11, 2011, quake that devastated northeastern Japan and triggered a massive tsunami that led to the world's worst nuclear crisis in a quarter of a century, one centered at the Fukushima No. 1 plant. The natural disaster which struck 70 km east-northeast of Namie, Japan measured magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS). There were no reports of abnormalities at the facility, public broadcaster NHK said. NHK aerial footage showed a portion of a highway blocked by a landslide in Soma, a city in Fukushima prefecture.

There are no reports of any damage or casualties caused by the quake.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato addressed reporters after midnight and said evaluations were under way.

While there was no tsunami warning generated by the quake, those near coastal areas were urged to move to higher ground as a precaution due to the likelihood of aftershocks.

Almost 10 years ago on March 11, 2011, three nuclear reactors in Fukushima melted down after a quake and tsunami in the area, killing more than 18,000 people.

Some people were taking shelter at evacuation centers, and were being warned to practice social distancing because of the coronavirus pandemic.
