'Democracy is fragile,' Biden says after Trump acquittal

'Democracy is fragile,' Biden says after Trump acquittal”

"Impeachment was never meant to be the final forum for American justice", McConnell said, noting Trump is "still liable for everything he did". The trial went on for two weeks of he-said-she-said. "This was the most bipartisan verdict in American history, a strong rebuke to President Trump, but frankly at the end of the day, the trial had reached its natural conclusion".

Trump did not emerge from this impeachment trial unscathed, however.

Graham reiterated "we need Trump-plus" and said Haley's "wrong about President Trump".

Casey, Pennsylvania's senior senator, had been expected to vote to convict Trump.

"The leader of the free world can not spend two weeks thundering that shadowy forces are stealing our country and then feign surprise when people believe them and do reckless things", McConnell said.

The vote removed a legal obstacle to Mr Trump staging a political comeback should he choose to run for election in 2024, as he risked being disqualified to run for the presidency again if found guilty.

This time the case did not hang on a whistleblower in the bowels of the national security bureaucracy.

The whole segment kicked off with Tucker Carlson - played by Alex Moffat - interviewing Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz - played by Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant - after the impeachment trial ended.

Outraged Democrats saw the approach as a classic McConnell tactic.

On Jan. 6, he sent his followers down that street to the Capitol, where they committed their mayhem.

A conviction could have seen him barred from office.

"Sorry haters, I'm not going anywhere", Trump declared after his Senate acquittal February 5, 2020, on charges of abusing power and obstructing justice.

Cassidy, 63 and a physician, had initially sided with the vast majority of Senate Republicans who voted last month to block the trial from moving forward.

Trump was first impeached in December 2019, charged with abusing the power of his office by pressuring Ukraine to investigate Biden in a bid to boost his own chances of re-election.

Democratic prosecutors argued he stoked the mob with false claims the election was stolen.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in USA military aid needed by Ukraine in its conflict with Russian Federation were hanging in the balance. Trump's statement hinted he would continue to play a role in United States politics.

But a majority of Republican Senators felt they had no jurisdiction to convict because Trump was now a private citizen and therefore no longer impeachable.

The moves are the latest in a series of censures and disciplinary actions doled out to lawmakers deemed to be critical of the former president in the wake of the Capitol riot, it added. "So we've opened Pandora's box here, and I'm sad for the country".

"What did Trump know, and when did he know it?" tweeted Rhode Island Sen. "Our case against lyin", cheatin', liddle' Adam "Shifty' Schiff, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, Nervous Nancy Pelosi, their leader, dumb as a rock AOC, & the entire Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrat Party, starts today", said one.

Graham only said Trump "bears responsibility of pushing narratives about the election that I think are not sound and not true".

So it was for almost everyone, quite suddenly.

After his acquittal, Trump released a statement denouncing the trial as "the greatest witch hunt in history".

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., a close ally of President Biden, reportedly urged House managers to relent on witnesses.

If there was anything like a smoking gun, it had been fired in plain sight. That could expose Republican senators seeking reelection in 2022 to primaries from conservatives seeking revenge, potentially giving the party less appealing general election candidates as they try winning Senate control. Romney was among them. Mitch McConnell, who voted to acquit. He even noted that though Trump is now out of office, he remains subject to the country's criminal and civil laws.

"He didn't get away with anything yet. Yet".
