Jake Tapper Calls Out Andrew Cuomo Amid Nursing Home Scandal”

"First, we must strip the governor of his executive powers, and then it is imperative that a full investigation be launched immediately".

New York State Senate Republicans, and now, a growing number of Democratic Senators, are seeking a special session in an effort to remove Gov. Andrew Cuomo's emergency powers in the wake of the report into the underreporting of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes statewide.

Cuomo was already facing criticism after a report from his own attorney general accused his administration of undercounting nursing-home deaths.

Over 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients were sent to NY nursing homes and long-term care facilities following the Cuomo administration's controversial March 25 directive requiring the facilities to accept such patients, according to the AP. And 11 new cases of the COVID-19 variant first discovered in the United Kingdom have also been confirmed.

People with underlying conditions like heart disease, cancer and diabetes have been shown to be more suspectible to serious illness and death during the pandemic, but until now, those over age 65, front-line workers, medical personnel and those in nursing homes have had priority.

The outpouring of condemnations amounts to the most significant pressure Cuomo has faced in his political career - even beyond a series of ethics concerns around the Joint Commission on Public Ethics and the scrapped Moreland Commission - with 14 Democratic state senators calling for his emergency powers to be taken away by the Legislature.

DeRosa said in the call that the governor's office was hanging on to the numbers because she wasn't sure if they'd be used against the administration if there was an investigation.

The "Am I Eligible" website will start taking those appointments at 8 a.m. Sunday morning, Cuomo said, as the state's supply of vaccine provided through the federal government continues to increase.

DeRosa responded to the leak, saying she was just explaining the administration had to put the request by lawmakers on hold while they responded to a federal inquiry. "We informed the houses of this at the time". Andrew Gounardes, a Brooklyn Democrat, tweeted.

Gov. Cuomo's office says new appointment slots are being rolled out on Sunday and throughout the week, including in Western New York at the University at Buffalo's South Campus.

Pataki pointed to the mass exodus of New Yorkers to other states, as they flee coronavirus restrictions, high taxes, and exploding costs of living.

Stefanik has frequently lambasted Cuomo as "America's worst governor", with some Empire State political insiders privately speculating that she may challenge him in the 2022 governor's race.

"It is more clear than ever who was really playing politics with this issue", he said.

Republicans, meanwhile, have demanded an independent investigation and committee resignations.
