Lawrence County Under Serve Winter Storm Watch

Lawrence County Under Serve Winter Storm Watch”

The National Weather Service is once again alerting Charlottesville-Albemarle residents to the possibility of winter weather in the University community following a snowstorm Thursday night that resulted in four to five inches of snow, hazardous travel and the cancellation of in-person classes Friday.

Snow, ice and teeth-chattering temperatures will sock much of the United States on Valentine's Day through early next week, with more than 100 million Americans under winter-related watches and warnings coast to coast.

This was generally in line with the Capital Weather Gang's forecast. Overnight lows tonight will be below freezing north of I-10 and outside of the Houston metro. Freezing rain and some form of winter mix are possible which could lead to icing on bridges and overpasses.

As much as a foot of snow could fall in parts of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle through Sunday night, according to the NWS. There's a chance that as temperatures trend colder Monday afternoon that the freezing rain can change over to sleet and some snow on top of the ice for Marion, Winston, Cullman, Walker, Fayette, Pickens, Lamar, and Tuscaloosa counties.

A deluge of ice and snow fueled by arctic cold and unrelenting winds is causing power outages throughout the northern Willamette Valley, Portland and coastal areas. This is not the ideal situation whatsoever starting out with ice; this will cause numerous impacts across the region. Travel will likely be very hard if not impossible by Monday night.

2-4 inches of snowfall is expected with higher amount possible in Montgomery County.

Snow has dominated the weather forecast in February, with flakes falling six out of the first 12 days.

Another concern is the winds.

Police in Salem at this time are also warning locals in Marion and Polk counties to be cautious of downed power lines and falling tree limbs, as several roads across the OR are blocked by fallen trees. As with any significant storm, there have been power outages reported throughout the region.

The bulk of the precipitation begins to work out of here by Monday afternoon/evening, but the threats and hazards will be far from over.

Tuesday is going to be brutally cold! Temperatures in Harris and Montgomery Counties will likely be in the single digits. The current forecast calls for a low in Spring of 9°F.

The high temperature in Portland is near 32 degrees on Sunday and will remain below freezing through the night, but temperatures should warm up to a high of 37 degrees on Monday.

Due to the continued temperatures below freezing on Tuesday, these travel impacts could easily last through Wednesday morning. You can also make sure your pipes and exposed faucets are protected too.

"Crews are out in full force now and are coordinating with local emergency response teams on communications for emergency services, such as warming centers", Brown said in a statement.
