The new mid-stage trial will determine whether the vaccine is effective for people between the ages of six and 17, according to a statement from the university on Saturday.

The National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC) provides guidance on all aspects of COVID-19 vaccination including prioritization of population groups, procurement and inventory management, vaccine selection, vaccine delivery and tracking mechanism etc.

Up to 240 children will receive the vaccine and the others will get a control meningitis jab.

Professor Andrew Pollard, chief investigator to the trial, says extending their distribution to children will aid in their understanding as to controlling the virus in younger age groups.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the education, social development and emotional well-being of children and adolescents, beyond illness and rare severe disease presentations", said Rinn Song, Paediatrician and Clinician-Scientist, Oxford Vaccine Group.

The trial will begin this month at Oxford University and its partner sites in London, Southampton and Bristol.

The 2-dose Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine has been hailed as a vaccine for the world because it is cheaper and easier to distribute than some of its rivals.

Pfizer Inc., which has an approved vaccine for people aged 16 and over, completed enrollment for its trial of 12-to-15-year-olds last month with more than 2,000 children tested.
