Votes by Florida's Scott and Rubio help ensure Trump won't be convicted

Votes by Florida's Scott and Rubio help ensure Trump won't be convicted”

The suspense over how he was going to vote underscored how much is at stake for McConnell and his party.

When the yeas and nays were counted, seven Senate Republicans joined Herrera Beutler in her courageous stand, voting along with all 50 Democrats to convict Trump.

The six senators are Richard Burr of North Carolina, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Democrats had hoped to sway a minimum of 17 GOP senators to reach the two-thirds majority required to convict Trump in January's Capitol riots. In a statement released late Friday, Herrera Beutler said McCarthy told her that Trump said to the minority leader that the mob storming the Capitol on January 6 was "more upset about the election than you are".

Mr Trump made the comment in a statement after the Senate acquitted him in his second impeachment trial in 12 months.

While describing the vote on whether to convict as a "close call", McConnell told colleagues in a letter that "I am persuaded that impeachments are a tool primarily of removal and we, therefore, lack jurisdiction". It is being called the most bipartisan impeachment trial result in the history of the United States.

Clearly angry, the Senate's longest-serving Republican leader said Trump's actions surrounding the attack on Congress were "a disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty".

At the House managers' press conference, Pelosi revisited the reason for the timing of the trial.

With the impasse resolved, the Senate began hearing closing arguments, evenly divided in time. That vote came a week after the pro-Trump mob stormed the neoclassical domed Capitol, interrupted the formal congressional certification of Biden's victory, clashed with an overwhelmed police force, invaded the hallowed House and Senate chambers, and sent lawmakers into hiding for their own safety.

His fellow Republicans shielded him from being held accountable for the deadly January 6 assault by his supporters on the US Capitol. McCarthy, she continued, "refuted that and told the president that these were Trump supporters".

Georgia's governor, Brian Kemp, is nearly certainly in Mr Trump's sights because of his refusal to overturn the presidential election results. He went to the police station the next day to report the sighting-"still hoping he would not be caught", the report says-and eventually made a decision to confess."I knew I didn't kill her on objective", he told the evaluator.

Democrats pounced on her statement.

The vote on witnesses, which was 55-45, temporarily threw a wrench into the proceeding, which had been on a fast track to end, with many senators from both sides of the aisle anxious to put it behind them and move on.

Trump's lawyers argued the trial was unconstitutional because he had already left office and that his remarks were protected by the constitutional right to free speech.

Yahoo! Finance estimated the first Trump impeachment at $11.5 million.

The Senate broke out in laughter Saturday after Trump defense attorney Michael van der Veen called for in-person depositions of witnesses in "Philly-delphia". "We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant, and limitless American future", Trump said.
