Pa. GOP to meet, discuss Toomey impeachment vote to convict Trump”

Kinzinger told the Times in an interview that he hopes to topple the "fear" tactics that Trump has used to sustain his stronghold in the party and that "does real damage to this democracy".

State and local Republican groups in the United States are rebuking national lawmakers from their own party who voted to impeach or convict former President Donald Trump of inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last month.

Michael Whatley, the state party chairman, said the central committee's decision serves as a symbolic gesture of the party's opposition to Burr's action. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Donald Trump's acquittal at his second impeachment trial may not be the final word on whether he's to blame for the deadly Capitol riot.

The effort to convict Trump for "incitement of insurrection" fell short by a 57-43 margin. Meanwhile, a new Quinnipiac Poll shows 75 percent of Republicans want Trump to play a "prominent role" in the future GOP.

"Thompson was hindered and impeded in the discharge of his official duties and suffered the deprivation of his right to be free from intimidation and threats in the discharge of his official duties, as explicitly protected under Ku Klux Klan Act", the filing continues.

The Republican Party faces internal conflict since Trump left office on Jan 20, with many officials remaining publicly loyal to Trump and his devoted base of voters, while others including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have publicly criticised the former president.

Liberal co-host Whoopi Goldberg, a long-time critic of former President Donald Trump who refused to say his name aloud, disagreed.

Mr Trump urged the crowd on January 6 to march on the Capitol, where Congress was meeting to affirm Joe Biden's presidential election, and said: "You'll never take our country back with weakness". Fred Upton and Peter Meijer for their votes to impeach Trump in the House.

Kinzinger has said that focus lies neither with angry GOP leaders in his district nor with the letter-writers in his family, whom he suggested suffer from "brainwashing" from conservative churches. If Trump is prosecuted and acquitted, that would allow him to portray himself as a martyr.

Biden has mostly stayed close to the White House since taking office almost a month ago, leaving the D.C. area only for weekend trips to his DE home and the Camp David presidential retreat in the Catoctin Mountains in Maryland.

Lawrence County's GOP voted to censure Toomey even before the trial, based on criticism of Trump's actions on January 6. He will retire from the Senate after 2022. Biden said little about Trump before and during the trial, insisting he wanted to let the Senate to do its job.

Burr is not the only Republican senator who has been reprimanded for voting to convict Trump.

"In 2020, I received the most votes of any sitting President in history, nearly 75,000,000".

"The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political "leaders" like Sen". Every incumbent House Republican won for the first time in decades, and we flipped 15 seats, nearly costing Nancy Pelosi her job.

Trump's lawyers countered that Trump's words were not meant to incite the violence and that impeachment was nothing but a "witch hunt" created to prevent him from serving in office again.

A spokesperson for Mr Trump responded: "He has been acquitted in the Democrats' latest impeachment witch hunt and the facts are irrefutable". "I think the idea that the Republican Party is just one swath ... it's just not nuanced".
