Bob Dole diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer TODAY”

Bob Dole announced Thursday he began treatment this week for stage 4 lung cancer.

The announcement from Dole - who faced off against former President Bill Clinton as the Republican candidate in 1996 - comes after the passing of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who died on Wednesday after a yearlong battle with lung cancer.

Dole won the Republican presidential nomination on his third attempt, in 1996, making him at the time, at age 73, the oldest ever first-time nominee for the White House.

In a tweet, Democratic Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly wished Dole "a swift recovery".

He served with Clinton following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as co-chairman of a scholarship fund for the families of the victims.

After his political career, Dole championed a movement to memorialize WWII on the National Mall. The young Army platoon leader spent three years recovering in a hospital but never regained use of his right hand. He earned two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for valor during his service.

"Senator Dole, just as you taught me that when there is 'any problem too big, just go listen to the people of Kansas, ' please know that the state we both love is behind you, and Laina and I and my entire family of course are behind you", Marshall said via WCVB.

He led Republicans when they were in the minority for eight years, from 1987 to 1995, and then again as majority leader starting in 1995.
