COVID-19 Has Cut Average Life Expectancy in America

COVID-19 Has Cut Average Life Expectancy in America”

The numbers show that minorities in America suffered the biggest impact, with African-Americans losing almost three years and Hispanics, almost two years of life expectancy.

Worldwide, the pandemic has infected more than 110 million people.

Life-expectancy estimates before 1980 have been measured less consistently, but experts told CNN that estimates for drops in life expectancy after World War II range from less than a year to three years.

The life expectancy for the average Americans just got significantly shorter.

Last year was the deadliest year in American history, with total deaths surpassing 3 million for the first time.

The study also found a growing gap between men - whose life expectancy fell to 75.1 years from 76.3 - and women, who experienced a slightly smaller drop to 80.5 years from 81.4.

Looking further at racial disparities in the data, the gap in life expectancy between non-Hispanic white and Black people widened from 4.1 years in 2019 to six years in the first half of 2020 - the largest gap since 1998.

Overall, life expectancy for all sexes and races fell by one year, from 78.8 years in 2019 to 77.7 years old in 2020.

This is the lowest figure seen for US males' life expectancy since 2006.

The gap between Hispanic and white non-Hispanic individuals narrowed, however, from three years in 2019 to 1.9 in 2020.

The provisional estimates were calculated by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics using death records in the USA from January through June 2020.

More needs to be done to distribute vaccines equitably, to improve working conditions and better protect people of color from infection, and to include them in economic relief measures, she said.

The only good news in the report is that life expectancy typically bounces back quickly, because of the way it is calculated. Included in those statistics are an uptick in fatal strokes and heart attacks and a record number of drug overdose deaths, 81,000 from May 2019 to May 2020.

Black Americans were more likely to work in frontline jobs, face unemployment and lack access to healthcare, all factors which raised their risk of death, Prof Goldman said. The data also hinges on the timely submission of death certificates, which may have been delayed due to pandemic-related logistical reasons, the report said. Arias said data from the full year will likely better reflect the impact of the pandemic on life expectancy, since the pandemic eventually spread throughout both urban and rural areas.
