Democrats set to unveil Biden’s immigration Bill

Bob Menendez, are set to unveil the full text of the bill.

But E-Verify, which checks a person's legal status to work in this country, "will not be mandatory" for USA employers, and Biden has said he would not expand the border wall. "There are others that want to do piecemeal and that may be a good approach, too". Migrants who could prove they've been employed as farm workers would also be eligible for that path.

The package would provide an 8-year path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented people - slashed to three years for eligible farm workers; people brought to the U.S. as children; and those who were granted temporary protected status for fleeing natural and manmade disasters.

But while the plan offers one of the fastest pathways to citizenship of any proposed measure in recent years, it does so without offering any enhanced border security, which past immigration negotiations have used as a way to win Republican votes.

For others living in the U.S.as of January 1, 2021, the plan establishes a five-year path to temporary legal status, if they pass background checks, pay taxes and fulfill other basic requirements. They would get a five-year provisional status, then could get a green card and get citizenship three years later.

Undocumented immigrants would also no longer face a three to 10-year ban from the United States for leaving and attempting to reenter the country.

The bill would greatly increase both family-based and employment-based legal immigration and allow certain previously deported immigrants to apply to return for humanitarian reasons. It also would provide resources for more judges, support staff and technology to address the backlog in processing asylum seekers.

The plan includes $4 billion spread over four years to try to boost economic development and tackle corruption in Latin American countries, to try to address some of the root causes of migration to the U.S.

Biden tapped the children of immigrants to shepherd his immigration bill through Congress. Bill sponsors are Rep. Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.), the sixth of seven children raised by Mexican immigrants in Southern California, and Sen.

Comprehensive immigration reform has struggled to gain traction in Congress for decades.

Biden has expressed hope for passing a bipartisan measure, and the U.S. Citizenship Act marks the first major effort since the Senate passed a massive immigration overhaul in 2013 and that effort died in the House.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., has suggested a more limited bill that focuses on DACA recipients, proposing it with Sen.

Biden indicated at a CNN town hall Tuesday night that he is open to alternate routes to citizenship - such as stand-alone bills that would legalize smaller groups of immigrants such as farmworkers - but he called the bill "a reasonable path to citizenship".
