New bill would end all legal use of banned assault-style weapons

New bill would end all legal use of banned assault-style weapons”

"We're backing up the cities with serious federal and criminal penalties to enforce these bylaws, including jail time for people who violate these municipal rules", said Trudeau.

Such bylaws could forbid keeping handguns at home, meaning they would have to be stored at a licensed business, or they might go further by outlawing handguns anywhere in a municipality.

During a Wednesday news conference, Toronto Mayor John Tory said he would like to see a federal ban, but what the federal government has proposed "amounts to less than a national handgun ban".

This is why, last May, the Government of Canada banned over 1,500 models and variants of assault-style firearms and some of their components.

Trudeau added that the federal government will back a push by some mayors to ban handguns in Canadian cities.

March said he doesn't think a handgun ban will be effective, especially one that's left to the discretion of individual municipalities.

"They can't be shot, they can't be used, they can't be transported, they can't be sold and they can't be bequeathed, they will have to be stored securely".

We also intend to move forward with a buyback program in the coming months to support the safe removal of these firearms from our communities.

"This is a huge win for the gun lobby", said Heidi Rathjen who was on the Polytechnique campus when the massacre occurred.

Suzanne Laplante-Edward, whose daughter Anne-Marie was killed at Polytechnique, said the optional buyback is a total betrayal.

"We thought we had won in the fall of 2019 when the Liberals announced with much pomp and circumstance that they would ban and buy back all of these killing machines".

Blair explained that effectively making the designated weapons useless would serve as an incentive to participate in the program, when asked why the plan is not mandatory. "They lied to Canadians".

"We all know we'll be hearing the well-funded gun lobby", Trudeau said as he laid out new restrictions in a media briefing with his Public Safety Minister and Minister of Justice and Attorney General Tuesday morning.

The Trudeau government came under fire Monday from one of its strongest support groups on the gun file as the Liberals tabled legislation meant to reinforce the sweeping semi-automatic rifle ban it suddenly imposed past year.

If the bill is passed, any owner who doesn't surrender a banned weapon will be held responsible if it is later used in a crime.

"Gun ownership in Canada, in this country, is a privilege and not a right". The measures we are proposing are concrete and practical, and they have one goal and one goal only.

Protect Canadians from gun violence by creating new offences for altering the cartridge magazine component of a firearm and depicting violence in firearms advertising, introducing tighter restrictions on imports of ammunition, and ensuring the prohibition of imports, exports, sales, and transfers of all replica firearms.

"This is a comprehensive bill that, if enacted, will save lives", said Dr. Najma Ahmed, co-Chair of CDPG and trauma surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.
