'A dour political hack': Trump levels stinging criticism at Mitch McConnell”

"The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political "leaders" like Mitch McConnell at its helm", Trump said in a statement.

Former president Donald Trump has told aides that he believes that going to war with Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell win him positive TV coverage, despite being warned of the political cost, The Washington Post reported.

Trump said he would vow to support primary challengers against congressional Republicans that voted for his second impeachment.

The statement is the latest sign of deepening divisions within the party, after McConnell said Trump was the one who incited the deadly attack on the US Capitol last month.

The gap between them widened when McConnell declared on the Senate floor on Saturday that Trump was "practically and morally responsible" for the deadly January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.

"There's no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day", McConnell said on Saturday, after Trump, the only president to be impeached twice, was acquitted on a 57-43 vote.

McConnell actually voted to acquit Trump, but, he said, only because he did not think it was constitutional to conduct a trial of a president who is no longer in office.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed published on Monday, McConnell defended his decision to vote in favor of Trump's acquittal, but said he had been "outraged" by Trump's actions.

"The grassroots of the Republican Party have always detested the leadership of the Republican Party", Morris said on Newsmax TV's "American Agenda" on Thursday, referring to a phrase he said former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., called the "country club Republicans vs. the grassroot Republicans".

Alongside the clear political divide in the USA, there also exists a fracture within the Republican Party, with many pro-Trump members of the GOP clashing with other conservatives.

"The basic debate in the Republican Party is who is best able to defeat the Democrats", Morris said. Kinzinger launched a political action committee in January to support anti-Trump Republicans and to purge Trumpism from the party.

He even noted that though Trump is now out of office, he remains subject to the country's criminal and civil laws.

While speaking with Fox News hosts Harris Faulkner and Bill Hemmer about the passing of conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday, Trump answered questions about the late radio personality's take on the 2020 United States presidential election, once again insisting that he had "won" on November 3.

Joining with the very few Republicans in the House and Senate with enough guts to condemn a president of their own party for his seditious acts, Herrera Beutler may be the bravest of them all.
