Essential workers should be prioritized for AstraZeneca vaccine, experts suggest”

Dr Jeong noted that there were no cases of fatalities from receiving Covid-19 vaccines developed by AstraZeneca or Pfizer/BioNTech.

When the AstraZeneca vaccine was approved for use by European Union regulators this year, France and other countries including Germany, Italy and Austria said it should not be given to the elderly, citing a lack of sufficient data.

But last month, two Canadian doctors submitted a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, which used USA data to suggest that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine could be 92 per cent effective against COVID-19 two weeks following the first dose.

The country authorised the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines.

That said, Sharma says seniors shouldn't wait for a Pfizer or Moderna shot if they can get an AstraZeneca jab sooner.

The reassessment is likely to help speed up France's vaccination campaign which many have criticised as too slow.

Last Friday, Canadian health regulators authorised the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine along with the Serum Institute of India version of the vaccine.

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, Health Minister Christine Elliott and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said that the province is "actively engaged" with the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) regarding potential updated direction on second dose intervals with "the goal of pursuing a similar direction to British Columbia".

Half a million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine will be arriving in Canada on Wednesday.

However, Bach said it would be unethical to not offer people a choice of vaccines in the same way they can make their own decisions on other aspects of their health care, though everyone should take the first vaccine they can get.

Colijn said that's all the more important if the wait for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines is several weeks or even months off, meaning fewer people would be protected from the virus.
