Prince Philips health is improving, says Duchess Camilla

London (CNN)Prince Philip, the 99-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, underwent a medical procedure for a heart condition on Wednesday, Buckingham Palace said in a statement Thursday.

During a visit to a vaccination centre in England on Wednesday, Camilla said her father-in-law is "slightly improving" and that the entire royal family are trying to stay positive.

"We keep our fingers crossed", the Duchess was quoted as saying.

Prince Philip has had a "successful procedure" for his pre-existing heart condition, and will remain in hospital for several more days.

Palace sources have repeatedly insisted that although the Duke has never before spent so long in hospital, his doctors were "acting with an abundance of caution".

The hospital move heightened concerns for the duke, who will turn 100 in June.

The prince was first admitted to the private King Edward VII Hospital in central London on February 16.

His youngest son Prince Edward and grandson Prince William have both commented on his state of health.

Edward said his father - a former naval officer - was looking forward to being discharged.

It means the Queen will have been parted from her husband of 73 years for at least three weeks.

She did not visit him at King Edward VII's Hospital as she is always reluctant to cause disruption to any hospital's vital work and knows her presence would place unnecessary pressure on staff at the best of times.

Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, retired in 2017 and rarely appears in public.

The queen, 94, has remained at Windsor Castle west of London, where the couple have been staying during the coronavirus pandemic, and last week continued to carry out her official duties by video. The palace has said the duke's illness is not Covid-related. She spoke to Finance Minister Rishi Sunak ahead of the Budget presentation.

In released excerpts, Harry described the couple's "unbelievably tough" battles with British tabloids and said he feared "history repeating itself", in an apparent reference to his mother Princess Diana, who died in a vehicle crash while evading paparazzi in 1997. The BBC will air a special programme to mark this, while rival independent network ITV will show the Oprah interview.
