Mystery person infected with Brazilian Covid variant finally found”

The variant has been designated "of concern" because it shares some important mutations with the variant first identified in South Africa.

A study this week suggested that between 25% and 61% of people in Manaus who had previously had COVID-19 were susceptible to reinfection with the concerning P1 variant.

Earlier this week, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the hunt for the infected person had been narrowed down to 379 households in the south-east of England.

"Using the latest technology and with the dogged determination of our Testing and Tracing scheme, we have successfully identified the person in question".

Officials have been hunting for the unknown individual after cases of the variant of concern were detected in the UK.

"But as a precaution we are putting more testing in in Croydon, where they live, to minimise the possibility of spread".

She added: "On Wednesday at 3pm, an individual phoned the 119 service".

Southwestern Public Health has confirmed two cases of COVID-19 variants in the region.

The three Scottish cases are residents who returned to north-east Scotland from Brazil, via Paris and London, and subsequently tested positive for Covid-19, but are not thought to be linked to the cases in England.

Two cases of a more contagious COVID-19 variant have been confirmed in Elgin and Oxford counties. There are eight variants on the United Kingdom watch list: four are under investigation and four have been listed as a concern.
