Kaduna Govt Speaks On Abduction Of 30 Schoolgirls”

The students collapsed to the ground as they were said to be suffering from the psychological trauma they went through when bandits attacked their school.

A screengrab taken on March 13, 2021, shows two of the students who fainted after they arrived at the school premises.

The commissioner said, "Further checks in the wake of the attack by armed bandits on the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Igabi LGA indicate that 39 students are now unaccounted for".

Both the Police Public Relations Officer for Kaduna State Police Command, Mohammed Jalige and Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, had confirmed the development to media sources.

Based on the latest figures from the Kaduna state government, 30 students including male and female are unaccounted for in the aftermath of the invasion.

Heavily-armed gangs in northwest and central Nigeria have stepped up attacks in recent years, kidnapping for ransom, raping and pillaging. Weeks before, dozens of children and staff were taken from a boarding school.

Residents near the Kaduna college also heard repeated gunshots in the area late on Thursday.

"We were not panicking, thinking that it was a normal military exercise being conducted at the (nearby) Nigerian Defence Academy", he said by phone.

They were eventually released after negotiations with Government officials.

Abdullahi said the armed men made a beeline for the female hostel, even though the male dormitory is nearer the fence where they came in.

On February 27, gunmen abducted 279 schoolgirls in nearby Zamfara state.

Kolawole Oluwadare, deputy director Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project in a statement on Friday condemned the attack calling on the Mohammadu Buhari-led government to wake-up to its responsibility of providing a safe learning environment for Nigerians at large.

"A combined team of police, army and other security forces are in a frantic search for the kidnapped students", state police spokesperson Mohammadu Jalinge told AFP.

"Frankly, we're disgusted by this pattern of mass abductions of school kids". Hours before the kidnapping, Nigeria's federal government said it would "take out" abductors after earlier criticising local deals to free victims.
