NY Democrats join calls for Cuomo's resignation - Newspaper”

"I did not do what has been alleged, period", Cuomo was cited as saying by Reuters. "Wait for the facts".

"Politicians who don't know a single fact but yet form a conclusion and an opinion are, in my opinion, reckless and risky", he added.

"You need to know the facts before you make a decision", he said. But he declared that people know the difference between a political game and a "culture of annulment" and the truth. He is now facing an investigation by lawyers working with the New York Attorney General.

He went on to say he is "proud" that he is not part of the "political club" and implied that is why others were "going after" him.

Earlier today, during a conference call with reporters, Cuomo said the calls for his resignation resulted from politicians recklessly jumping to conclusions.

"The fact that this latest report was so recent is alarming, and it raises concerns about the present safety and well-being of the administration's staff", popular progressive Ocasio-Cortez and fellow House Democrat Jamaal Bowman said in a joint statement.

Cuomo has repeatedly said he will not step down.

But, he said, "what is being alleged simply did not happen".

What will happen now given Cuomo's apparent determination to stay in office at all costs remains manifestly unclear.

On Thursday, they got an investigation into all the allegations by a parliamentary committee, the first step in a possible impeachment measure. His strategy does not appear to be working.

The sixth accusation came to light on Wednesday, when the Times Union newspaper reported that in 2020, Cuomo allegedly put his hand under the blouse of a female staffer and touched her "aggressively" in his private residence. And another aide said the governor once kissed her without consent, and said governor's aides publicly smeared her after she accused him of sexual harassment. But more Democratic lawmakers from surrounding and upstate communities have joined in as the week progressed.

At time of writing, more than a dozen congressional lawmakers from different wings of the New York Democratic Party had issued calls for Cuomo's resignation - including fourteen out of nineteen members of its House delegation (with state-level officials being even more numerous).

Spokespeople for New York's Democratic U.S. Sens.

U.S. Reps. Grace Meng, Yvette Clarke, Antonio Delgado, Nydia Velázquez, Brian Higgins, Mondaire Jones, Carolyn Maloney, Sean Patrick Maloney and Adriano Espaillat are also calling for Cuomo to step down.

"Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of the people of NY".

Nadler, the House Judiciary Committee chair, concurred that "the repeated accusations against the governor, and the manner in which he has responded to them, have made it impossible for him to continue to govern at this point".

New York Democrats also pointed to sweeping criticism of Cuomo for keeping secret how many nursing home residents died of COVID-19 for months. The governor has claimed his administration had to verify deaths of residents at hospitals, but critics question why that hasn't held up the release of data in other states.

Other top New York Democrats such as Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand had not called for Cuomo's resignation as of Friday morning.

The 63-year-old governor is seeking his fourth four-year term next year. And the New Yorkers "and was to resign", in a statement.

Lawmakers have also cast doubt over the governor's ability to lead the state - for which he published a book hailing his governance during the Covid-19 pandemic - after findings revealed that thousands of virus-linked deaths in nursing homes were not accurately reflected in the state's data, threatening to undermine his reputation as the widely broadcast antidote to former president's chaotic coronavirus briefings.

So far, seven women have come out to speak against Cuomo's actions.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is now investigating the allegations and hiring a law firm to conduct the probe and present the findings in a report.
