Calls Grow Louder For Tax Deadline Extension

Calls Grow Louder For Tax Deadline Extension”

Following a year like no other in history, the main income tax filing deadline is less than a month away.

As of last week, the agency had processed 25 percent fewer returns than the year prior, prompting Democrats to call for an extension, according to NBC News. Because May 15 falls on a Saturday, the final deadline for filers may be the following Monday.

Some legislators, tax preparers and tax industry associations have been calling for a delay to give people more time to file their returns. The agency said they needed more time to program its systems to reflect new tax rules.

The IRS may have made a decision to heed the pleas of lawmakers and advocacy groups who have been urging the tax agency to postpone this year's April 15 filing deadline.

CNBC, citing IRS data, added that the IRS had received almost fifty-six million returns and processed almost forty-nine million as of March 5, both fewer than at the same time during the 2020 filing season.

The IRS was already running behind this year.

The IRS this year began accepting 2020 returns as late as February 12 instead of its customary January start date, NBC News.

Those unable to file on time can request an extension to October 15, though taxes not paid by the deadline are subject to interest and penalties.

"We welcomed the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) decision previous year, after bipartisan calls from Congress, to provide an automatic filing and payment extension to July 15, 2020".
