Child Border Crossings Surge As DHS Chief Defends Policies

Child Border Crossings Surge As DHS Chief Defends Policies”

To ABC News, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said something similar: the Biden administration inherited "a broken system at the border, and they are working to correct that in the children's interest".

On January 20, his first day in office, Biden scrapped several of Donald Trump's contentious immigration policies, including halting new construction of a border wall and proposing legislation to create a citizenship pathway for the almost 11 million people living illegally in the US.

US President Joe Biden urged migrants not to come to the United States on Tuesday, as criticism mounted over a surge in people arriving at the southern border with Mexico - including thousands of unaccompanied children.

"I know organizations like ACLU and American Friends Service Committee were part of conversations with the White House political director around this, that the Homestead facility and other influx facilities are just not what we're looking for out of this administration in terms of moral clarity and them reimagining how to tackle these issues", Kennedy says.

The number of unaccompanied teens and children who have been taken into U.S. custody along the U.S. -Mexico border has shot up in recent weeks, as the number of migrants attempting to cross into the country increases.

Another temporary overflow facility is opening this week in Midland, Tex., at the site of a former camp for oil field workers, two officials said.

Border control officers are now grappling with increasing numbers of children who are trying to cross into the country from Mexico by themselves.

"We are on pace to encounter more individuals on the southwest border than we have in the last 20 years".

In Arizona, Border Patrol officials have started releasing detained asylum seekers in Yuma and Tucson.

The Dallas Convention Center is scheduled to begin holding children as early as Wednesday with plans to accommodate up to 3,000.

The total of 561 unaccompanied minors from Monday offers a snapshot of how quickly conditions have changed along the border. She said they think a more "humane" policy is in place now that Trump is no longer president.

"The situation at the southwest border is hard", Mayorkas said in a lengthy statement. Officials say it's also likely that smugglers have encouraged people to try to cross under the new administration.

"Here's the deal, they're not", he said.

"They're coming in from all foreign countries, I see they're coming in from Yemen, they're coming in from the Middle East, they're coming in from everywhere", he said.

As the crisis along the southwest border deepens, Democrats have come up with a new spin: it's all Donald Trump's fault.

"The sad part about all of this is it didn't have to happen".

On his way to becoming President, Biden promised to reverse many of his predecessor's inflammatory and controversial U.S. immigration policies.

Migrants who are under 18 years old are being allowed to remain in the country while the government decides whether they have a legal claim to residency, either under asylum law or for some other reason.

Mayorkas noted that 80% of the children, most of whom are from the three Northern Triangle countries of Central America, have a relative in the USA and 40% have a parent.

The Biden administration last week ended a Trump policy that made relatives reluctant to contact HHS to retrieve children for fear of being deported themselves.

Amid a surge in the number of migrants putting pressure on processing systems at the USA border with Mexico, the Biden administration has called in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ease the strain.

Mayorkas took swipes at the previous administration for dismantling an asylum system that would have enabled a more "orderly" immigration system, cutting aid to Central America and failing to vaccinate Border Patrol agents.

Also, he said the Biden administration is working to make the asylum process shorter and to make it possible to petition from an applicant's home country rather than make a unsafe and uncertain journey.

Migrants hold a demonstration demanding clearer United States migration policies, at San Ysidro crossing port in Tijuana earlier this month.
