Ontario on its way to administering 150000 COVID-19 vaccines per day

But Maj. -Gen. Dany Fortin is still reluctant to make that declaration official, as the threat of vaccine production issues still looms large over Canada's vaccine hopes.

A White House official confirmed Thursday that the Biden administration is planning to send 2.5 million doses to Mexico and 1.5 million to Canada as a "loan".

Officially, Canada still says Canadians will be fully vaccinated by the end of September.

Although Canada's economy is tightly interconnected with the U.S., Washington hasn't allowed any of the hundreds of millions of vaccine doses made in America to be exported until now, and Canada has had to turn to Europe and Asia. Only people over the age of 16 can now be vaccinated and about 31 million Canadians are in that age group.

The vaccine supply chain difficulties have forced Canada to extend the time between the first shot and the second by up to four months so that everyone can be protected faster with the primary dose. "We're in discussions and we will give an update once we have further information", was the response from Joelle Paquette, the director general responsible for vaccine procurement at Public Services and Procurement Canada.

"While there is no indications of disruptions or fluctuations in the production, it is a pandemic with global demand on vaccines that are produced as rapidly as possible", Fortin said in Ottawa.

Also Thursday, the premiers of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador said the Atlantic travel bubble will be restored by April 19. Moderna will ship 846,000 more doses next week, bringing their first quarter total to two million doses, which hits their first-quarter target.

The United States now has seven million "releasable" doses of the vaccine, which has yet to receive approval from its Food and Drug Administration, she said.

Canada's entire delivery of 444,600 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech for this week has been delivered.

He says 42 per cent of Canadians over the age of 80 and 12 per cent of Canadians between 70 and 79 are now vaccinated.

"The conversation has been about the United States providing 1.5 million doses now, and then when we receive our 20 million doses of AstraZeneca that we are entitled to under a bilateral agreement with AstraZeneca, we will then exchange that back and provide 1.5 million back to the United States", Anand said, crediting this deal to the ongoing conversations at the federal level. In March we've only received enough supply to do just over 1.6 million.

Quebec has surpassed 300,000 COVID-19 infections with the 702 new cases reported Thursday.
