Thousands evacuated due to New South Wales flooding”

Reuters images showed submerged intersections, marooned livestock and cars up to their windshields in water, out of which poked the tops of street signs, as three days of rain swelled rivers in the most populous state of New South Wales (NSW).

"While WaterNSW is not authorised to lower the storage based on weather forecasts, significant pre-releases prior to a flood event could make flooding events more unsafe", WeatherNSW said. Suncorp and IAG said it was too early to estimate the final number of claims or costs.

It comes just a year after unprecedented climate-change bushfires burned across the same region, which followed a prolonged drought that had also seen Sydney introduce water restrictions.

"This is different. What we're going through now is different to what you've been through for the last 50 years, so please take it seriously", said NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Sunday was Sydney's wettest day of the year, with 4.4 inches of rain recorded, and the downpour is expected to continue until Wednesday. The water spill is sending more water into the already-swollen Hawkesbury-Nepean River.

A helicopter rescued a stranded bride and groom on Saturday to get them to the church on time.

On Monday, emergency services rescued around 20 dogs from rising floodwaters in northwest Sydney.

"I made it to the church and married the love of my life!" she said on Twitter on Monday. New South Wales was severely affected by last year's ferocious bush fires, which affected numerous communities now struggling with the floods.

Heavy rain will remain a serious risk on Tuesday for the Mid North Coast, where communities are facing the worst flooding conditions since 1929.

Authorities urged residents to heed the "dozens" of official warnings in place across affected areas, with State Emergency Service assistant commissioner Dean Storey saying those in evacuation zones "must leave immediately".

The wild weather is expected to continue for several days as two intense weather systems clash tonight.

A severe weather warning has also been issued for neighboring Queensland, with heavy rains likely bringing flash flooding to southern and western parts of the state.
