Biden administration: Harris to play lead immigration role”

(CNN)President Joe Biden is tasking Vice President Kamala Harris with overseeing efforts with Central American countries to stem the flow of migrants to the U.S. southern border, senior administration officials said on Wednesday, the first major issue Biden has assigned directly to his No. 2. The president said his administration would also reinstitute funding to aid development and immigration enforcement in border nations. Critics have said the crisis at the southern border could destroy the country if the Biden administration refuses to act swiftly.

"This new surge we're dealing with now started with the last administration, but it's our responsibility to deal with it humanely and to stop what's happening", Biden said. Migrants coming across have said so themselves.

"I also look forward to working with members of Congress who I think share our perspective on the need to address root causes for the migration that we've been seeing", she said Thursday at the White House before she and Biden discussed immigration with the secretaries of homeland security and health and human services, as well as other advisers.

The role will represent the first significant item in the vice president's portfolio, and her involvement has the potential to elevate the issue within the White House and broader administration.

US Vice President Kamala Harris has come under fire for laughing out loud when she was asked whether she planned to visit the southern border, after photos of people sleeping on the ground in crammed clear pens emerged online.

"As the president has said, there are many factors that lead [migrants] to leave these countries", Harris said. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported encounters with more than 100,000 migrants in February alone.

Numerous centers along the southern border are over capacity, provoking government officials to hastily erect more facilities.
