European Union vaccine boss says will use all tools available over AstraZeneca shortfalls

European Union vaccine boss says will use all tools available over AstraZeneca shortfalls”

Von der Leyen earlier made it clear the European Union would be prepared to suspend vaccine deliveries to Britain unless the bloc receives a "fair share" of shots from the UK.

"We are not even receiving a quarter of such deliveries as regards this issue", Galina said, adding AstraZeneca could expect measures from the EU.

According to the report, however, Johnson sought assurances from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emanuel Macron that supplies of COVID-19 vaccines and components for their production in the United Kingdom would not be affected by the ongoing 'Vaccine War' claimed to have been launched by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The trouble began in late January, when AstraZeneca told the bloc it would cut its deliveries by more than half in the first quarter of 2021, upending vaccine rollout plans.

The move, which European Union officials said could hit AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, is created to avoid even limited delivery shortfalls to a region whose inoculation program has been beset by delays and supply issues.

"It's not something this country would dream of engaging in and I'm encouraged by some of the things I've heard from the continent in the same sense".

"The reason we have the vaccine success is because of capitalism, because of greed my friends", The Sun newspaper quoted him as saying during a meeting with Conservative lawmakers to rally them to support coronavirus restrictions. The Leiden-based plant, run by the sub-contractor Halix, may produce about 5 million shots a month, according to press reports.

The new export controls are aimed at making it easier to stop shipments leaving the EU if manufacturers haven't fulfilled their European commitments.

The talks have shown some progress, with the two sides already discussing what the scope of a compromise would look like, according to one official who asked not to be identified because the process is private.

With no numerical targets, the change is unlikely to trigger mass export bans of EU-made vaccines, the official with insight into the announcement said on Wednesday.

Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic told reporters in Brussels Tuesday that the emphasis is on "fairness" when it comes to distributing the critical shots.

"We will consider: Reciprocity: whether the destination country restricts its own exports of vaccines or their raw materials, either by law or other means and Proportionality: the epidemiological situation in the destination country, its vaccination rate and vaccine stocks", the statement published on Twitter read.

"In practice, all this is, is a piece of paper that says please take this stuff into consideration when you're looking at approving export authorizations", the official said.
