"This is the safe move": Alberta not moving into Step 3 restrictions

Three more people have died from COVID-19 including a man in his 90s and a woman in her 80s in the Edmonton Zone linked to the outbreak at Churchill Manor, and a man in his 80s linked to an outbreak at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. Individuals with symptoms should continue to be tested by scheduling through Alberta Health Service's online self-assessment tool.

Shandro went on to say he did not want to ease restrictions today, only to put them back on in a few days.

Since October of a year ago, Alberta has received around 2.6 million rapid tests with an additional one expected by the end of April.

"This is the safe move".

"We just need to hold fast for a little longer", Shandro said.

Mr. Shandro said even as the province moves further into its reopening plan, the government would be monitoring COVID-19 data and could impose targeted restrictions if needed, for example if a particular activity is identified as driving infections.

Daily COVID-19 infections were below 300 in recent weeks but have been ticking up steadily and have been well above 400 for nearly the last week.

Alberta's variants have doubled in the last two weeks and make up 16 per cent of total active cases.

On Monday, the province's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Deena Hinshaw, suggested the British variant could soon make up the majority of cases in the province.

Five additional deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing Alberta's death toll to 1,968.

Public-health experts had been urging the government to delay reopening plans and some have said the province should lock down to prevent a third wave.

Currently, retailers, restaurants, youth sports, and in-person worship services are open with capacity restrictions, but indoor gatherings remain banned and outdoor get-togethers are capped at 10 people. Two members of Mr. Kenney's caucus joined an anti-lockdown group.
