North Korea, immigration, re-election top agenda at Biden's first White House presser

North Korea, immigration, re-election top agenda at Biden's first White House presser”

And, he called a Republican Party effort to change US voting laws as "un-American" and "sick". "It is sick", Biden said when asked about Republican lawmakers' efforts to impose voter restrictions across the country.

"We are going to hold China accountable to follow the rules", he said, citing the South China Sea and Taiwan among a range of other issues.

While seemingly ambitious, Biden's vaccine goal amounts to a continuation of the existing pace of vaccinations through the end of next month.

"I think my Republican colleagues are going to have to determine whether or not we want to work together, or decide that the way in which they want to proceed is to, is to just decide to divide the country", Biden said.

During the press conference, Mr. Biden remarked on and responded to questions regarding migrants at the U.S. -Mexico border, the COVID-19 pandemic, the filibuster, voting rights laws, and troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, and China. As Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy pointed out, Biden also was not asked about his jobs plan for a "green economy". But he said it would be hard to withdraw all US forces there by the May 1 deadline.

Biden took foreign policy questions about China and North Korea, but Russia was left unmentioned despite the constant attention Democrats have given the Kremlin and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Biden administration has sought to restart talks with Kim Jong Un's regime in hopes of persuading the North to give up its nuclear program, but thus far has faced radio silence from the North. Biden was restrained as he admonished the North for the latest tests. If they choose to escalate, we will respond accordingly. The format and pre-selection of questioners didn't allow the refutation of such whoppers as his assertion that the "overwhelming majority" of people arriving at the southern border were sent back, or that most Republicans support him; (the real number that does is ten percent-he may have been referring to support of his Covid Relief bill, but that is not what he said).

Biden was also pressed about committing to the withdrawal of United States troops from Afghanistan by May 1 and said it was going to be "hard" to meet the deadline in terms of "tactical reasons". "The question is when we will leave".

"Thirdly in order to compete effectively.we're going to invest in American workers and American science". He added that he did not believe troops would still be there in 2022.

Wetin conservatives dey tok about Biden first press conference?

The president still stood behind a podium against a backdrop of flags.

Due to coronavirus precautions, the press conference was held in the East Room at the White House with socially distanced chairs spread out for journalists.

West Wing aides had dismissed the high interest in the news conference as a Washington obsession, pointing to Biden's high approval ratings while suggesting that the general public was not concerned about the event.

A low hurdle was cleared and the president was alert and affable; the bad, outrageous nightmares of the Trump-baiting press conferences and all the contumely of that era are mercifully receding, but honeymoons, especially as hokey a honeymoon as this one, don't last long.
