Shanghai mRNA COVID-19 vaccine begins phase 1 clinical trials”

U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer announced Thursday its joint vaccine with German company BioNTech SE would begin trials on children under 12 years old.

The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was authorised by United States regulators in late December for people age 16 and older.

"We are proud to start this much-needed study for children and families eagerly awaiting a possible vaccine option", the USA drugmaker added.

The pediatric trial, which will include children as young as 6 months, follows a similar one launched by Moderna Inc last week.

The double-blind placebo-controlled vaccine trials are being conducted among people at high risk of contracting COVID-19 aged 18 and above, the hospital said.

The first volunteers in the early-stage trial were given their first injections on Wednesday, Pfizer spokesperson Sharon Castillo said.

The company will later move forward with a 4,500 participant late-stage trial.

Results from the trials on 12 to 15 year olds are expected in the coming weeks according to Pfizer, while the outcomes of the trials on younger children will hopefully arrive in the second half of this year.

The Philippines has received 525,600 AstraZeneca doses from COVAX, which provides vaccines to developing countries to ensure equitable access.

The state health department has informed that all arrangements for administering the COVID vaccine to people above 45 years have been completed.

Health workers with previous Covid-19 infections had six times the immune response to one dose of the Pfizer jab than those who hadn't had the virus.

Although kids do not typically experience severe coronavirus symptoms, experts believe they need to be vaccinated in order to reach herd immunity.

Under-18s account for roughly a fifth of the U.S. population of 330 million, and most experts believe it will be necessary to make inroads towards immunizing children in order to achieve population level immunity.

'Our hope is that we demonstrate that COVID-19 vaccines prevent people from getting infected with coronavirus in the first place and that it stops transmission to others, ' said Dr Larry Corey, principal investigator of the network's operations program.
