Australian PM promotes women in cabinet reshuffle amid poll slump”

On 12 March, leaders of the four Quad countries - Prime Minister Modi, his Australian counterpart Morrison, US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga - held their first summit under the framework of the Quadrilateral coalition with the growing global concerns over China's increasing assertiveness in the strategic Indo-Pacific region in its immediate backdrop.

Mr Morrison said Ms Linda Reynolds will leave the role of Minister of Defence and will replaced by Mr Peter Dutton, who was previously Minister of Home Affairs.

Christian Porter, who is accused of raping a woman 33 years ago, has been stripped of his role as Attorney-General.

This is a developing story.

Mr Porter will now take on the portfolio for industry, science and technology.

A shambolic press conference by Scott Morrison the next day, in which he falsely claimed News Corp Australia - publisher of - was subject to its own harassment investigation, saw criticism intensify.

Defence Minister Linda Reynolds will remain in cabinet and will now take on the portfolio of government services and head the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The young staffer said she was raped by a more senior colleague in the minister's office two years ago and Reynolds was forced to apologise after it emerged she had called Higgins a "lying cow". He argues the changes will improve policy development regarding women's safety, and economic security.

"The changes I'm announcing today will once again, provide the strongest ever female representation in an Australian Government cabinet", he told reporters on Monday.

Mr Morrison said Minister for Women Marise Payne would now act as the "prime minister for women".

"But it's not just about the size of the female contingent in my cabinet; it's the skills and the experience, it's the perspective, and it's the collaboration they bring to our nation's most hard tasks", Morrison said.

The Australian parliament has been engulfed by allegations of sexual abuse, discrimination against women and misconduct.

"I would urge that the path we have to go down is one that we have to go down together", Morrison said last week.

Separately, two female employees of Morrison's Liberal Party have said they were raped by a former employee, who has not been identified, in 2019 and 2020.
