Makassar explosion: Worshippers wounded in Indonesian church bombing

Makassar explosion: Worshippers wounded in Indonesian church bombing”

The two suspected bombers both died, according to Indonesian police. The wounded include five church workers and four worshippers, DW reports, citing South Sulawesi police.

Attacks aimed at foreigners have been largely replaced in recent years by smaller, less deadly strikes targeting the government, police and anti-terrorism forces and people militants consider as infidels.

Indonesia has long struggled with Islamist militancy and has suffered a series of attacks in the past two decades, including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed more than 200 people, mostly foreign tourists.

The attack came as Indonesia was on high alert following the arrest of Aris Sumarsono, known as Zulkarnaen, the leader of Jemmaah Islamiyah in December.

The congregation had been inside the church for Sunday service at the time of the explosion, South Sulawesi police spokesman E. Zulpan said.

President Joko Widodo strongly condemned the terrorist incident.

"State apparatus won't allow such terrorist actions and I call on people to worship calmly, because the state guarantees the security of worshippers to worship without fear".

The explosion took place when locals gathered to spend their Sunday morning in the nearby Karebosi square.
