AstraZeneca Covid Shots Not Recommended For Under 55s In Canada”

Many European countries suspended the use of this vaccine when reports of blood clots first arose, but the European regulator, World Health Organization and Health Canada have previously all determined the shot is safe.

The Canadian national broadcaster CBC reported that the AstraZeneca vaccine has not yet been widely used in the under-55 age group thus far. That's short for vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia, which Morrison says can occur in one out of every 125,000 to one out of every one million vaccinations. There have been no reported instances of blood clots following immunization in Canada.

NACI has recommended that Canada and the provinces should hold off on giving the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine to Canadians under 55 owing to some safety concerns coming out of Europe.

The province says in a news release that the decision was taken in conjunction with the Public Health Agency of Canada as well as provincial and federal vaccine advisory committees. Typically, the symptoms would show up between four and 20 days post-injection.

Health Minister Patty Hajdu says Health Canada has been monitoring data very closely following reports of adverse effects in other jurisdictions.

More than 11 per cent of the population has now received at least one dose. However, through our ongoing global collaboration, Health Canada has become aware that additional cases of these events have been reported in Europe.

"In light of this developing information, Health Canada will be issuing additional terms and conditions on the authorizations of the AstraZeneca and Verity pharmaceuticals serum institute of India vaccine".

Of those, more than five million had been administered as of Sunday afternoon, according to "Health Canada will be reviewing this evidence when available".

They have, however, updated warning labels to note the very rare occurrence of blood clots.

Prince Edward Island announced on March 9 that it would offer the AstraZeneca vaccine to people aged 18 to 29 who work in gas stations and convenience or grocery stores.

"It's important for everyone, when it's their turn, to get a vaccine because the more people that get vaccines, the sooner we'll be able to go back to a more normal life for everyone", Elliott said from the Toronto pharmacy where she got the shot.

The US, which has stockpiled some 7 million doses of the vaccine, also agreed to loan shots to Canada.

"Some residents younger than 55 would have received AstraZeneca including eligible health-care workers and vaccinators, though no thrombosis-like adverse events have been reported in Saskatchewan to date".
