Brisbane goes into a snap three-day lockdown

Brisbane goes into a snap three-day lockdown”

Premier Annastacia Palszczuk says six cases are believed to be linked to existing cases, while two are still under investigation.

Australia reported eight new locally acquired Covid-19 cases in Queensland on Tuesday (March 30) and authorities warned more could emerge as the state scrambles to quash an outbreak linked to the highly contagious United Kingdom variant of the coronavirus.

Both clusters are linked to frontline healthcare workers who worked at the Princess Alexandra Hospital when they were not vaccinated.

"So, as of tomorrow, I will mandate, as I have been saying now for several weeks to the hospital and health services, that only people who have had their first dose of the vaccine, whether it be Pfizer or AstraZeneca, can work directly with confirmed cases of COVID", Dr Young said. "And we have a second cluster linked to the PA nurse".

A male entertainer at the party, who is also a tradie who lives on the Gold Coast, is one of five people from the hens celebration who have tested positive overnight.

"Both clusters are B117, or commonly called the United Kingdom variant, but they are very, very different. They are two different virus genomes", Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said. Even though both are from the PA Hospital, Dr Young said the two clusters are "unrelated".

The Premier said they're now working with the Commonwealth to "respond to that aged care facility". "As Dr Young advised, so our contact tracers can get on top of this as quickly as possible".

It's sparked a 72-hour lockdown on Greater Brisbane with a huge contact tracing effort underway to determine where the cases have been while potentially infectious.

"But every resident in that aged care facility has already been vaccinated, had their first dose..."

The festival, which will one of the state's first music festivals since lockdown began in March 2020, will have a reduced capacity to 50 per cent however more than 10,000 people are still expected to attend.

The premier said it was too early to say if the lockdown would end on Thursday afternoon.

Attendees will be seated and sanitisation stations will be set up across the festival site with COVID-19 marshals present to enforce social distancing rules.

"Do we expect to see more cases - probably, probably we will see more. Probably. Probably, we will see more".

Easter holiday plans are also in disarray as states and territories imposed strict border measures in response to the Brisbane cluster. "I don't want to see that happen to Queensland, I don't want to see that happen to Australia".

Anyone from Greater Brisbane must isolate and get tested upon entering the Northern Territory and the ACT.

The lockdowns now affect the council areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Logan, and Redlands.
