Ford says Ontario is considering additional restrictions as COVID-19 cases rise”

"The Education Minister will be keeping a sharp eye on it, as will the Medical Officer and myself". It is now expected to start on Monday April 12th.

"I'm extremely concerned with the situation that we're seeing and the numbers going up", he said.

Lecce, Ontario's education minister, on Tuesday said in making the announcement, he's following the advice of the province's chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams. "I can't give you a direct answer right now, two weeks down the road".

A TDSB spokesman says the message was sent before Ford's comments and that the school board was reminding its administrators to be prepared just in case.

The Progressive Conservatives have been late to make decisions about schools previously in the pandemic, including extending the winter break after it had already started, a month after hinting they would and then saying they wouldn't.

When pressed further, he said the government would decide by the end of the week. "Nevertheless, our public health officials will be quick to close schools where there's some concern about ongoing transmission in the schools, especially as we look for our variants of concern (VOC)".

There are now 3,732 active cases among children and teens.
