Mexico's Covid-19 death toll may be 60% higher than officially reported

Mexico's Covid-19 death toll may be 60% higher than officially reported”

The number of reported deaths in Mexico linked to the virus now exceeds that of Brazil which was previously the second-hardest hit country by the number of deaths related to the virus, despite Mexico having a smaller population.

Since 15 February there have been an additional 26,772 test-confirmed deaths in Mexico.

The health ministry's latest official toll stood at 201,623 on Sunday - the third highest in the world, behind Brazil at more than 312,000 and the United States at around 549,000 fatalities.

The Mexican government said Saturday that it had updated its COVID-19 death toll from 201,429 to 321,000, a jump of almost 60%.

The government said that the only way to develop a clear picture of the real impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was to review excess deaths and death certificates.

National statistics institute INEGI reported in January that Mexico had registered 68 percent more coronavirus deaths up to the end of August 2020 than reported at the time by the health ministry.

The new Health Ministry report suggests that a total of more than 321,000 people have likely died from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

That number jumped by around 75,000 in just a month and a half.

The overall number of excess deaths - the difference in the number of deaths in a pandemic year with a non-pandemic year - reached 417,000.

Excess deaths are determined by comparing the deaths in a given year to those that would be expected based on data from previous years.

Former President Felipe Calderón, Tweeted on Saturday that "more than 400,000 Mexicans have died, above the average for previous years ... probably the highest figure in the world".
