113 container ships transit Suez Canal after Ever Given re-floated

113 container ships transit Suez Canal after Ever Given re-floated”

"Admiral Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, has announced the resumption of shipping traffic in the Suez Canal", the Suez Canal Authority said in a statement, shortly after shipping sites had showed it to have once more diagonally blocked the waterway.

Suez Canal Authority chairman Osama Rabie expects 140 ships to pass on Tuesday after the freeing of a container ship stranded for almost a week allowed it to reopen, reasserting that he hoped the build-up would be cleared in three to four days.

Even though traffic through the canal has resumed, more than 400 ships are waiting to get through, raising concerns about supply chain disruptions.

International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Kitack Lim Monday congratulated Egypt and the Suez Canal Authority on successfully refloating MV Ever Given ship. The owners and insurers of the ship could be looking at claims totalling millions of dollars, Reuters reported.

About 12% of global trade passes through the 193km (120-mile) canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and provides the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe.

The Suez Canal consultant underscored that the ship's captain is the one who has the final decision on the navigation of the ship.

The vessel's technical managers, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, said on Monday that its initial investigations suggested it had veered off course due to strong wind.

Knock-on effects to global shipping and at ports could take much longer to disentangle.

The dives were part of a continuing investigation into what caused the grounding of the Ever Given, now anchored in the Great Bitter Lake, a wide stretch of water halfway between the north and south ends of the canal.

He also denied size was a factor, saying "larger ships" had used the waterway.
