US Rep. Matt Gaetz under federal investigation, New York Times reports”

Having sex with a minor is serious business and should be punished. In fact, it's "unclear", to use the NYT's word, whether it even rises to an "investigation". Trump administration officials were notified of the probe, the report says.

Investigators are examining whether Mr. Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws, the people said.

Gaetz went on to name the DOJ official he claimed was trying to extort him as David McGee, a former DOJ prosecutor.

Gaetz repeated the extortion claim in a statement, alleging that a former Justice Department employee, whom he did not identify, had been "seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name".

Gaetz said in a tweet that he has been "cooperating with federal authorities".

"Tonight I am demanding that the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation release the audio recordings that were made under their supervision, and at their direction, which will prove my innocence and which will show that these allegations aren't true, they're merely meant to try to bleed my family out of money", he added.

"No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation", he said.

Elected in 2016, Gaetz rose to national prominence in recent years as one of Trump's most vocal defenders. He also was alleged to be some kind of sugar daddy, with at least one of the recipients of his largess an allegedly underage teen.

The sources said the Gaetz inquiry is a sideline to an investigation into one of Gaetz's political allies, Joel Greenberg, who resigned as Seminole County tax collector following his indictment last summer on charges including sex trafficking.

That means the "people" weren't there but heard about it from someone else and now Gaetz has shed some light on who that might be.

This isn't the first time Gaetz has been accused of sexual misconduct.

Two of the people told the newspaper the encounters investigators are looking at took place two years ago. If this is the case, it is in clear violation of sex-trafficking laws, which state it is "illegal to induce someone under 18 to travel over state lines to engage in sex in exchange for money or something of value". Just asked President Trump. He said McGee dangled a pardon in front of him to make the DOJ investigation go away."I know that there was a demand for money in exchange for a commitment that he could make this investigation go away, along with his co-conspirators", Gaetz declared. Efforts to reach Gaetz's father were not successful Tuesday night. "And she was actually threatened by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, told that if she wouldn't cop to the fact that somehow I was involved in some pay-for-play scheme that she could face trouble."He added: "And so I do believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to smear me, you know".
