Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz staying on Judiciary Committee despite investigation

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz staying on Judiciary Committee despite investigation”

"It if comes out to be true, yes, we would remove him if that was the case".

"I can say that actually you and I went to dinner about two years ago, your wife was there and I brought a friend of mine, you'll remember her", Gaetz said. The conservative Florida Republican confirmed the investigation to Axios hours after the New York Times reported that investigators are looking into whether the 38-year-old had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and violated sex-trafficking laws by paying for her to travel with him.

The elder Gaetz said he was going to wear a wire and meet with one individual involved in this alleged plot on Wednesday, but that "fell apart" after news of the DOJ investigation broke.

Some Democrats have called for his committee positions to be revoked.

In a statement Tuesday night on Twitter, Gaetz vehemently denied the allegations reported by The Times.

"He should not be sitting on a Congressional Committee with oversight over the DOJ while the Department is investigating him", Lieu wrote in a tweet. Take it from me rumors and headlines don't equal truth. He said none of the women he's dated were underage, so I still don't understand what he's saying here.

Matt Gaetz, a congressman from Florida, confirmed he was the subject of the Department of Justice investigation but denied that he had ever had a relationship with underage girls.

The Department of Justice investigation was reportedly opened in the final months of the Trump administration, when the department was being led by former attorney general Bill Barr.

"Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organised criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name", he said in a statement. "I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicates their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations". The firm said McGee had served in top positions at the US attorney's office in Florida about 25 years ago and his "reputation for integrity and ethical conduct was impeccable".

"Which as you saw, he did", Carlson said with a smirk, adding that he didn't think Gaetz's appearance "clarified much" but that the still-unfolding story is "deeply interesting".

McGee, who worked in the Justice Department from the late 1980s to the late 1990s, has received outstanding service awards from the Justice Department and the U.S. Marshals Service, as well as a special commendation from the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to his biography.

"No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets. of the ongoing extortion investigation", he continued.

The Times cited three people familiar with the matter, saying the scrutiny was part of a broader Justice Department probe into one of his political allies and fellow Florida politician, Joel Greenberg, who was indicted last summer on sex trafficking and other charges that he stalked a political opponent.

Gaetz appeared to be on the offensive on Carlson's show, attempting to get in front of the allegations, calling it "extortion".

"I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorise my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward", Mr Gaetz told the New York Times. You know, providing for flights and hotel rooms for people that you're dating who are of legal age is not a crime.

"I know that there was a demand for money in exchange for a commitment that he could make this investigation go away along with his co-conspirators".
