Ford Government Set to Pull "Emergency Brake" Province Wide

Ford Government Set to Pull

Primary care doctors across the province will also be able to offer the vaccine soon - though it's unclear exactly how many doses will be sent to those physicians.

The province's seven-day average for number of cases recorded is now 2,341, up from 1,794 one week ago. In total, the province has seen 7,389 deaths related to the novel coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. At least 433 of these patients are being treated in intensive care and 259 are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

During a news conference on Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford hinted restrictions were coming.

As of Thursday, Ontario has identified 2,116 lab-confirmed cases of variants of concern, and another 22,371 cases that are awaiting whole genome sequencing to confirm their lineage.

Although COVID-19 cases are rising in communities, Brown said schools should be the last service to close because of its damaging effects.

The Ford government has faced criticism over its failure to offer supports for essential workers, especially in the COVID-19 hot spots, including paid sick days.

A daily report by Critical Care Services Ontario, which tracks hospitalizations, stated 430 people are now in the ICU with a COVID-19-related critical illness - up from 421 the day before. There are 785 new cases in Toronto, 433 in Peel, 222 in York Region, 153 in Hamilton, 124 in Ottawa and 120 in Durham.

Ford's focus on young people comes despite Ontario's Science Table providing data back in February indicating that if Ontario loosened restrictions, cases would rise.

"Stay tuned", said Ford in responding to a question on what Ontario's plan was to handle the third wave of COVID-19.

In the last 24-hour period, officials said that 84,060 doses of the vaccine were administered to residents in the province.
