2 officers injured after vehicle rams US Capitol barrier; suspect dead”

She says the suspect then exited the vehicle with a knife and lunged at the officers.

A man rammed a auto into two Capitol Police officers at a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol on Friday afternoon before being shot by authorities when he got out of the vehicle while holding what appeared to be a knife, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

It doesn't appear the driver was known to Capitol or Metro Police, officials said.

While the incident remains under investigation, some have alleged that Trump and supporters encouraged the attack and that Trump officials held back on deploying additional law enforcement and troops to fight back the attackers.

Authorities said that the Capitol has been put on lockdown.

The attack took place close to where armed insurrectionists stormed the complex housing the US Congress on January 6.

Police said in the tweet that both officers and the suspect were transported to the hospital.

Congress is in recess and many staff offices are closed in observance of Good Friday. Pittman said the suspect did not appear to have been on police radar.

"What I'm told here is that the auto came in and after the auto, the blue Sedan rammed the Capitol police officers there, the suspect got out of a vehicle with a knife and that's when he was shot by the Capitol police officers", Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram reported, adding, "They do have National Guard troops there".

The crash and shooting happened at a security checkpoint near the Capitol as Congress is on recess.

Capitol Police said a suspect rammed his auto into two officers near a barricade on Constitution Avenue.

A text message sent to staffers by the US Capitol Police (USCP) indicated that a "external security threat" had been detected.

They were told that no one could enter or exit and were advised to stay away from exterior windows and doors.

Other footage showed National Guard troops marching toward the Capitol. The driver has since died, they said.

Several hundred rioters broke down doors and windows and poured into the halls of the legislature, some calling for physical attacks on members of Congress and on then-vice president Mike Pence, who was there to preside over a session to formally declare Joe Biden the victor of the election. And if they were outside, they were told to "seek cover".
