CDC Issues Guidance on Travel for Fully Vaccinated People”

However, experts say the United States appears to be entering into another surge in coronavirus cases this spring, which is partially due to more travel.

"While we believe that fully vaccinated people can travel at low risk to themselves, CDC is not recommending travel at this time due to the rising number of cases", CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House Covid-19 Response team briefing Friday.

Fully vaccinated people are free to travel domestically and overseas with little precautions except wearing a mask in public, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday.

The CDC, along with President Biden, are urging Americans to follow public health guidelines and get vaccinated.

Khan said the update reinforces the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines, and is another incentive for people to get vaccinated. People should still wear a mask, socially distance and avoid crowds, the agency says.

"Fully vaccinated" is two weeks after receiving the second dose or the Moderna of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, or two weeks after receiving the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine. CDC still recommends fully vaccinated people have proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to returning to the USA, and get tested 3-5 days later. They should stay home and quarantine for seven days after traveling, or 10 days if they don't get a test, the CDC says. They do not need to quarantine.

Unvaccinated people are still advised to avoid unnecessary travel.

But worldwide travelers headed to the United States should have a negative Covid-19 test before they get on the plane, be tested after arrival, and must quarantine if local authorities in the United States require it, the CDC said in a statement. The agency cited "recent studies" of real-world evidence proving vaccines work outside of a clinical trial environment. It also said vaccinated people could visit with unvaccinated people from a single household under similar conditions, as long as the unvaccinated individuals were at low risk for severe illness if infected.
