Netherlands temporarily halts AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine for under-60s”

An AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is prepared at the local vaccination centre as the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues in Hagen, Germany, on March 19, 2021.

"The registration of the Covid-19 vaccine supplied through the Covax facility is implemented through a recognition mechanism on the Emergency Use Listing (EUL) approval announced by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on February 15", he said in a statement today.

On Tuesday, an independent vaccine expert panel in Germany said AstraZeneca shots should not routinely be given to people under 60 because of a rise in reported cases of unusual blood clots in the days after vaccination.

"This condition has presented as either a clot appearing in the brain or as thrombosis in other sites, including in the intra-abdominal venous systems", he said. "Between day four and day 20, after vaccination, and have generally caused severe symptoms requiring hospitalisation", he said.

He emphasised the risk of Australians contracting COVID-19 was "far greater" than contracting the rare blood clotting disorder.

Seven people in the United Kingdom have died from unusual blood clots after receiving the AstraZeneca Covid-19 jab.

The AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines have shown "very high levels of protection" against Covid-19, the agency said, adding that "all vaccines and medicines have some side effects".

Speaking to Reuters, the government's chief medical adviser said U.S. authorities had secured enough coronavirus inoculations to immunise the entire population and possibly administer booster shots in the autumn.

Lareb said the events had occurred 7 to 10 days after vaccination.

The man received his vaccine dose on March 22.

The agency said it had identified 30 cases of rare blood clot events following use of the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab, out of 18.1 million doses administered up to and including March 24.

A 44-year-old man was admitted to a Melbourne hospital with clotting days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, suffering serious thrombosis and a low count of platelets, or blood cells that stop bleeding.

In an updated recommendation on its website, STIKO said there was no scientific evidence on the safety of a mixed series of vaccines.
