Pfizer vaccine offers '100% protection against South African variant'

The longevity of the immune response is truly good news.

Fully vaccinated people who are traveling internationally do not need to be tested for COVID-19 before leaving the United States unless their destination requires them to be, and they do not need to self-quarantine upon arriving in the country, federal health officials said.

The vaccine supplies will be produced at Aspen Biopharama plant in South Africa.

Out of 800 trial participants in South Africa, only nine got sick which included six with the B.1351 variant.

The latest figures from Africa CDC showed that as of Friday, the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Africa has reached 4,239,639, and the death toll from the pandemic stood at 113,142, while 3,794,269 patients have recovered.

"Our findings extend those from smaller studies reported elsewhere and support a potential strategy of providing a single dose of vaccine to persons with a confirmed prior history of coronavirus infection, along with two doses for people not previously infected", said Susan Cheng, Associate professor at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in California, US.

Pfizer's vaccine is already authorized for use in people starting at age 16.

'I would not be surprised if this is a vaccine that we only get once'.

"The antibody levels were so high that they'd gone above the thresholds so they had to dilute them".

Although the new study did not look at the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, Prof Moss said the evidence for the jab is that "it's very, very effective". And the combination of having very high levels of antibodies and persistent levels of protection are the recipe for a very long level of protection against these variants, ' Hensley added.

Prof Moss said the UK's plan to exit lockdown appears to be "on track", with policies to control variants, the development of new vaccines and a strong immunisation programme.
