The Netherlands suspends use of AstraZeneca vaccine for under-60s

The Netherlands suspends use of AstraZeneca vaccine for under-60s”

The fresh reports lift the total number of cases to 30 as at March 24, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said in a statement on Thursday.

The government has cleared the AstraZeneca vaccine following fears it causes blood clots.

In response to the MHRA's data, Prof Adam Finn, a member of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), insisted taking the vaccine was "by far the safest choice" to minimise the risk of serious illness or death from Covid-19.

Kidd said people who received either of the Covid-19 vaccines should be aware of the common side effects, which include fever, sore muscles, tiredness and headaches usually 24 hours after the dose. Still, countries are counting on the shot to help them exit the pandemic, and millions of doses have been administered across the region.

"I remind anyone receiving a vaccination over the coming few days that these instances of serious clotting disorders are extremely rare and have occurred in only a very small number of cases", he said.

In a statement today, the ministry said the decision to approve the vaccine produced by the Covax facility was based on the approval it received for emergency use from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Feb 15.

An AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is prepared at the local vaccination centre as the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues in Hagen, Germany, on March 19, 2021.

On Tuesday, an independent vaccine expert panel in Germany said AstraZeneca shots should not routinely be given to people under 60 because of a rise in reported cases of unusual blood clots in the days after vaccination.

Meanwhile, Australia is investigating whether a blood clotting case recorded yesterday is related to the AstraZeneca vaccine, a health official said, raising concern in a nation where most people are expected to receive the drugmaker's shot. "We have to be able to trust the vaccines", Merkel said.

"This condition has presented as either a clot appearing in the brain or as thrombosis in other sites, including in the intra-abdominal venous systems", he said.

The head of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has said that there is "no evidence" to support restricting the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in any population.

The first doses of a third vaccine - from Moderna - are due to arrive in the United Kingdom later this month. As per the terms of a contract signed in February, Canada is set to receive an additional 1.5 million vaccine doses from the company by mid-May, in addition to the 500,000 doses received last month as reported by Sputnik.
