US Capitol: Driver dead after ramming police barricade

US Capitol: Driver dead after ramming police barricade”

The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) said in a tweet shortly before 1:30 p.m. ET they are "responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers". "So I ask that you keep our U.S. Capitol Police family in your thoughts and prayers".

Authorities do not believe that the attack was terrorism-related.

A statement from the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department said: "A call came in at approximately 1:05 pm to the unit block of Constitution Ave, NE, for the report of a possible shooting".

All roads leading to the complex were cordoned off as well.

But, Ms Pittman said, they also remain on edge.

Evans is the seventh Capitol Police member to die in the line of duty in the department's history, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks deaths of law enforcement.

Authorities have begun only in the past couple of weeks to remove the outer ring of high, razor-wire-topped fencing erected around the sprawling Capitol complex after the January 6 rampage.

In a press conference a few minutes later, authorities announced one of the officers had since died.

President Joe Biden left Washington earlier in the day for Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

"On behalf of the entire House, we are profoundly grateful".

Two officers were struck by the vehicle and have been taken to hospital. "At least one officer drew their weapon and shot the suspect".

Reuters reported that dozens of police cars, marked and unmarked, had raced toward the Capitol building and that the complex had been placed in lockdown.

Video posted online showed a dark-coloured sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police K9 inspecting the vehicle.

In recent weeks, some security has been loosened, with the number of armed National Guard troops at the Capitol reduced and a security fence that created a broad perimeter around the Capitol complex removed.

The incident occurred as both the House and Senate were in recess, though both buildings have staff - and reporters - working inside. As customary, he was traveling with a member of the National Security Council Staff who was expected to brief him on the incident.
