Jordan's Queen Noor says plot attributed to son ‘wicked slander’

Jordan's Queen Noor says plot attributed to son ‘wicked slander’”

Prince Hamzah bin Hussein, the eldest son of the late King Hussein and his US-born fourth wife Queen Noor, claimed in a video recording on Saturday that he had been told to stay at home and not to contact anyone by "the chief of general staff of the Jordanian armed forces".

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Jordan's army Yusef Huneity denied reports that Prince Hamza had been arrested but said he was told to "stop activities that are being exploited to target Jordan's security and stability".

The half-brother of Jordan's King Abdullah II says he has been placed under house arrest by Jordanian authorities and accused the country's leadership of corruption and incompetence.

"No one is above the law and Jordan's security and stability are above all", he told the official Petra news agency.

"Jordanian citizens, Hassan bin Zaid, Basem Ibrahim Awadallah, and others were arrested", the state news agency Petra reported, citing a security source.

Many countries and groups have reacted saying King Abdullah has their full support.

"The kingdom stresses its full support for the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan. and for the decisions and measures taken by King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Hussein to safeguard security and stability", it said.

The country's top general had earlier denied that Hamzah - a former crown prince stripped of the title in 2004 - was arrested or under house arrest, even as authorities announced the arrests of former senior officials close to the ruling monarchy.

Since the news broke Saturday, #Prince_Hamzeh has trended on Twitter, along with messages of solidarity with the prince from followers in Jordan and overseas.

Jordan's King Abdullah II, right, speaks across a table to U.S. Vice President Mike Pence during a 2018 lunch at the royal palace in Amman.

Prince Hamzah served as Jordan's crown prince for four years before the title was transferred to the current monarch's eldest son, Hussein.

In late March, media reported that Jordan had unveiled a new defense agreement with the United States, which allowed free entry of American military personnel, aircraft and vehicles into the Kingdom.

Yemen's internationally recognised government "affirms its absolute support and totally stands with all decisions and measures taken by His Majesty King Abdullah aimed at maintaining security and ending any attempts to destabilize the sisterly Kingdom of Jordan", state news agency Saba said.

King Abdullah has ruled the country since the death of his father, King Hussein, in 1999. He has good relations officially with Abdullah, his half-brother, and is a popular figure close to tribal leaders. He has cultivated strong ties with several USA administrations, but, in recent years, sparred with former president Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over proposed Israeli plans to annex the West Bank and bypass the Palestinians in a bid for Israeli normalization with the rest Arab world.

Before becoming royal court chief in 2007, he was head of the king's cabinet in 2006.

Despite having little oil wealth and severely lacking water, the kingdom has managed to survive repeated wars in the region which have sent waves of refugees across its borders.
