Officer killed in attack near US Capitol”

One officer died and another was injured in the incident.

The suspect, 25-year-old Noah Green of IN, was shot and killed.

The US Capitol went into lockdown on Friday (local time) after the incident at the North Barricade vehicle access point along Constitution Avenue outside the iconic building.

President Joe Biden issued a statement expressing condolences over the death of the police officer.

"I just ask that the public continue to keep U.S. Capitol Police and their families in your prayers", Pittman said. Both Capitol Police officers were taken to the hospital, with one having "succumbed to his injuries", Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters.

Harris also said, "In an inexplicable act of violence, a fearless US Capitol Police Officer, William Evans, was killed in the line of duty while another officer fights for his life. We know what a hard time this has been for the Capitol, everyone who works there, and those who protect it", the President said. He ordered flags at the White House to be lowered to half-staff.

The suspect was shot and killed by one of the officers after exiting "the auto with a knife in hand" and "lunging" at the officers, Yogananda Pittman, the acting Capitol Police chief, said at a press conference.

In Instagram stories, some posted just hours before the attack, Green blamed the U.S. government for his issues and wrote he believed federal law enforcement agencies were trying to conduct mind-control experiments on him, according to CNN.

"The man exited the vehicle with a knife and ran toward our officers". "Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years". One USCP officer was transported by a USCP cruiser to the hospital.

It was the second line-of-duty death this year for the U.S. Capitol Police, still struggling to heal from the January 6 insurrection.

Fortification of the Capitol was strengthened following the January 6 riot, but was recently eased.

Capitol Police and National Guard troops were called upon soon afterward to secure the Capitol during Biden's inauguration and faced another potential threat in early March linked to conspiracy theories falsely claiming Trump would retake the presidency.
