COVID-19 vaccine: Over 70 million doses administered in India

COVID-19 vaccine: Over 70 million doses administered in India”

Six of the nine were confirmed to be caused by B.1.351.

The cumulative number of coronavirus vaccine doses administered in the country crossed seven crore with 12,76,191 doses given till 8 pm on Friday, the Health Ministry said as India registered this year's highest single day rise of 81,466 infections. "The high vaccine efficacy observed through up to six months following a second dose and against the variant prevalent in South Africa provides further confidence in our vaccine's overall effectiveness".

Pfizer and BioNTech say their COVID-19 vaccine is about 91 per cent effective at preventing the disease, citing updated trial data that included participants inoculated for up to six months.

"This booster experiment will reveal (1) if strain-adapted vaccines boost immunity & (2) whether they are safe", Haydon, a communications specialist at the University of Washington, said via Twitter last Saturday.

The trial data "provide the first clinical results that a vaccine can effectively protect against now circulating variants, a critical factor to reach herd immunity and end this pandemic for the global population", Ugur Sahin, chief executive officer at BioNTech, said in a statement.

The results follow separate data that showed the vaccine is safe and effective in 12- to 15-year olds, paving the way for the drugmakers to seek USA and European approvals for this group. The company submitted updated data to FDA showing how much vaccine can be extracted from each vial using different types of syringes.

There were also no serious safety concerns observed in trial participants up to six months after the second dose, the companies said.

U.S. top infectious diseases doctor Anthony Fauci told Reuters on Thursday that the country may not need AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine even if it wins United States regulatory approval.

From the 927 confirmed symptomatic cases of Covid-19 in the trial, 850 cases were in the placebo group and 77 cases were in the vaccinated group. The agency says they recommend against this practice because the COVID-19 vaccine does not contain a preservative and there is a risk of contamination. For the study, the team conducted a survey of 1,090 healthcare workers at Cedars-Sinai who had received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The approach has been tested against other viruses and studies in animals and people show they stimulate a strong and broad immune response.

More doses of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine could soon be available after the FDA revised how many doses could be available per vial, up to 50% more.
