India records this year's biggest single-day jump in positive cases

India records this year's biggest single-day jump in positive cases”

The daily cases peaked on September 16, 2020, with 97,894 people testing positive for the virus in a single day.

The country's daily infections have leapt nearly 12-fold since hitting a multi-month low in early February, when authorities eased most restrictions and people largely stopped wearing masks and following social distancing. In total, India has seen 89,129 new infections and 714 deaths, the largest daily spike since September 20 and most deaths since October 21.

The reasons for the sharp rise in cases could be mainly attributed to the severe decline in compliance of COVID-appropriate behaviour, especially in the use of masks and social distancing, pandemic fatigue and lack of effective implementation of containment measures at the field level, it said.

Among other states, Chhattisgarh discovered more than 5,000 cases for the second straight day, while Punjab slipped to the 3,000-range once again. Delhi and Uttar Pradesh joined the 4,000-a-day club along with Karnataka after a long time. But the shots have been slow to reach India's almost 1.4 billion people.

About 490 deaths were also reported Sunday, with Maharashtra accounting for 235, including the ones that the state classified as having been caused by co-morbidities. The 31 deaths reported from the state Sunday was the highest in four months.

The country has made little progress in sequencing its test samples, with news reports stating that less than 1 per cent of samples have been studied so far.

Maharashtra has accounted for 57 per cent of new infections over the past 14 days and 47 per cent of deaths during the period.

"There is an alarming rate of growth of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the country", Prime Minister Narendra Modi's federal government said in a statement at the weekend. Maharashtra alone accounts for almost 58.23 per cent of the total active caseload of the country, the ministry said.

As infection numbers continue to spiral, five Indian states are in the middle of local elections, with thousands of people thronging to campaign rallies.

The variant, described by officials as a "double mutant", had been found in more than 200 samples in the hardest-hit western state of Maharashtra, which is home to India's financial capital of Mumbai. Prime Minister stressed on the need to continue Jan Bhagidari and Jan Andolan for COVID-19 management. "A special campaign for Covid appropriate behaviour with emphasis on 100% mask usage, personal hygiene and sanitation at public places, workplaces and health facilities will be organised" from April 6-14, the PMO said.
