Last Of Stranded Ships On Suez Canal To Pass Through On Saturday”

The Ever Given spent six days wedged into the side of the canal, blocking traffic in both directions.

Ship Ever Given, one of the world's largest container ships, is seen after it was fully floated in Suez Canal, Egypt, on March 29, 2021.

But online rumors and fake news headlines spread that she was behind the maritime disaster, which held up the major shipping route for almost a week before the Ever Given was freed.

The online rumors were propelled by a doctored image of a news headline headline that said she was involved in the Suez accident.

"Frankly, when I read the news I was upset because I worked really hard to reach the position I have reached", she said in a video posted online.

"I felt that I might be targeted maybe because I'm a successful female in this field or because I'm Egyptian, but I'm not sure", she said.

How did the Ever Given get stuck?

Elselehdar works for the Egyptian Authority of Marine Safety.

The identity of the Ever Given's captain has not been revealed.

"This fake article was in English, so it spread in other countries", Elselehdar told the BBC.

The bogus story prompted trolls to come after her, too.

Elselehdar said she was always drawn to the sea and had been spurred toward a career on the water after he brother began studies at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, a regional university.

Worldwide supply chains were thrown into disarray when the 400-metre-long Ever Given ran aground in the canal on March 23, with specialist rescue teams taking nearly a week to free it after extensive dredging and repeated tugging operations.

She said some of the comments were harsh, but many were supportive of her. A year later, she was honoured by Egypt's president during Egypt's Women's Day celebrations, the BBC said.

"Also, it is worth mentioning that I became even more famous than before".

The canal normally handles about 50 ships a day, but had to increase that to between 80 and 90 to clear the backlog.

Despite already captaining ships, Ms Elselehdar will take her final exam to attain a full Captain rank next month and hopes that she can continue to be a role model for women in her industry.

"My message to females who want to be in the maritime field is fight for what you love and not let any negativity to affect you", she said.
