Australia and New Zealand to start quarantine-free travel

Australia and New Zealand to start quarantine-free travel”

People will also be denied travel if they have any cold or flue symptoms.

Before today's announcement, several Australian states - namely New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland - already allowed Kiwis to travel into the country without the need for quarantine, but they wouldn't be greeted with the same freedom when they returned home.

Ms Ardern has said there will be no vaccine requirement when travelling in the trans-Tasman bubble, but some medical checks will be carried out.

"Our health response now gives us the opportunity to connect with loved ones again", Ms Ardern said.

"We absolutely wish to encourage family and friends to reunite and visitors to come and enjoy the hospitality New Zealand is ready and waiting to offer", she said, but cautioned that "people will need to plan for the possibility of travel being disrupted if there is an outbreak".

New Zealand and Australia are among the top performers in the global battle against the virus - New Zealand has consistently topped Bloomberg's Covid resilience ranking and Australia now lies third.

More than a year after the arrival of coronavirus' arrival to Aotearoa, New Zealanders remain fearful of the return of the deadly virus.

NZ first agreed the bubble in May after Ms Ardern attended National Cabinet, with Australian counterpart Scott Morrison and state and territory leaders. Australians will soon no longer be required to quarantine on arrival.

"[This travel bubble] represents an arrangement I do not believe we have seen in any other part of the world". Announced today by PM Jacinda Ardern, the travel bubble will begin on April 19.
