Biden moving vaccine eligibility date to April 19, official says”

Biden was scheduled to visit a COVID-19 vaccination site in Virginia on Tuesday, followed by remarks at the White House updating the nation on the administration's progress against the coronavirus.

Less than a month after directing states to expand eligibility to all adults by May 1, Biden is expected to change that deadline to April 19.

Biden is "confirming for the public that everyone is eligible around the country", White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Tuesday.

Psaki said the US-Japan alliance is a cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity in the region.

"It reduces confusion and it ensures that Americans who are not yet vaccinated, who are looking to get vaccinated, they know they are all eligible, all adults, I should say, on April 19", she said.

Biden is also expected to tout the more than 4 million vaccine doses administered in one day over the weekend. That puts the president well on track to meet his new goal of 200 million shots administered by April 30 - his 100th day in office.

Biden's original goal had been 100 million shots by the end of his first 100 days, but that number was reached in March. President Biden is expected to announce an April 19 deadline for all states to open eligibility to individuals ages 16 and up.

When vaccine doses were in shorter supply, states initially limited distribution to higher-risk groups, such as the elderly and front-line healthcare workers. People still have to make appointments to be vaccinated. That means Americans no longer need to check with state and local websites to see whether they qualify, she said. Almost 1 in 4 adults are fully vaccinated, they added. Seventy-five percent of people older than 65 have now received at least one shot, and more than 55% of them are fully vaccinated.

The authorized vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech both require two doses, while Johnson & Johnson's is a one-shot vaccine.

But vaccine supplies and efficiency in getting shots into arms have increased significantly in the race to get more people inoculated as more contagious virus variants circulate.
