European Medicines Agency Confirms blood clot link with AstraZeneca Covid vaccine

European Medicines Agency Confirms blood clot link with AstraZeneca Covid vaccine”

"We were scheduled to have received over 3 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from overseas by now, which have not arrived in Australia because of the problems with shipments that we've seen happening here and in other parts of the world", Acting Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd told Sky News.

More information will be shared by the agency later today, as Cavaleri said "in the next few hours, we will say that there is a connection, but we still have to understand how this happens", reported the Associated Press via Barron's.

A top official in the European Medicines Agency said in an interview published Tuesday that there is a link between the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine and blood clots. What causes this reaction, however, we still do not know.

The EMA is expected to give an update of its investigation on Wednesday.

But, when asked if the incidence of rare blood clots can be linked directly to the vaccine, Mr Cavaleri replied: "In my opinion we can now say it - it is clear there is an association with the vaccine".

Mr Cavaleri confirmed the benefits of having the vaccination still outweighed the risks and added: "We will go into the various age groups in more detail".

The EMA last week recommended that countries should keep using the AstraZeneca vaccine because the benefits outweighed the risks, as countries including Italy suspended their rollout of the jab.

But in its statement on March 31st the agency added: "A causal link with the vaccine is not proven, but is possible and further analysis is continuing".

Still, countries are counting on the shot to help them exit the pandemic, and millions of doses have been administered across the region.

In Britain, about 30 of the 18 million people vaccinated with AstraZeneca by the end of March are known to have developed blood clot symptoms, and seven of them died, according to a report by the BBC (external link).

The comparable figures for France are 12 cases and four deaths out of 1.9 million doses, and for Norway, five cases and three deaths out of 120,000 doses.

In total, the United Kingdom has ordered 457 million doses, of which 100 million are from AstraZeneca.

But as is true of all medications, risks must always be weighed against benefits.
